The Work
What the project involved
Two buildings in one envelope
The brief combined requirements that usually sit in separate structures. A full-court basketball facility needs clear span framing, significant clear height, sport flooring, and lighting designed around the shooting arc. Living and dining areas need residential finish, acoustic separation, conditioning, and moisture control.
Delivering both under one roof is a coordination problem more than a construction problem, which is exactly the situation where separate contracts fall apart. One contractor holding the whole scope means the court requirements and the residential requirements get resolved against each other rather than negotiated after the fact.
Structure
A custom metal building, clear spanning the court so no columns sit inside the playing area. Eave height was set by the court rather than by a standard building height, since clear height above a basketball court is measured to the lowest obstruction and it is not something that can be added later.
Court and interior
The full court sits alongside private locker and shower suites and the living and dining areas. Each of those spaces carries different mechanical, acoustic, and finish requirements inside a single envelope.
Fitting the setting
The building sits in a residential area of Franklin surrounded by mature landscape. A large metal structure in that context is an aesthetic problem as much as a technical one, and the design works with the setting rather than against it.
Why It Matters
Structure and court under one contract
Most companies that build courts in Middle Tennessee install surfaces. They do not put up the building around them.
That leaves an owner holding two contracts, and when the slab is not flat enough for the flooring system or the lighting sits in the shooting line, the two parties disagree and the owner absorbs the cost.
Horn is a licensed general contractor. The structure, the slab, the court, the lighting, and everything around them sit in one contract with one party accountable.
